🧪 Zinc Chloride Lab Simulation

Place the empty crucible on the analytical balance and record its mass.

Add approximately 0.25 g of zinc powder into the crucible and weigh again.

Carefully add 10 mL of 6 M HCl solution into the crucible containing zinc powder.

⚗️ Vigorous reaction occurring! H₂ gas released

Continue stirring until all zinc powder is completely dissolved. Add more HCl if needed (max 20 mL total).

Place the crucible on a hot plate in the fume cupboard. Heat slowly to prevent splattering.

Continue heating gently until the compound is completely dry. Remove immediately to avoid melting.

⚠️ Precaution: Avoid overheating!

Cover the crucible and allow it to cool to room temperature. Then weigh and record the mass.

Reheat the crucible, cool, and weigh again. Repeat until the mass difference is less than 0.02 g.

Calculate the mass of zinc chloride and the mass of chlorine.

Calculate the moles and determine the empirical formula of zinc chloride.
